From Nigerian scams to missives about Viagra, most of us have dealt with obnoxious spam and feel confident in ignoring it. But what about when the spam just *might* be true? What if it mentions to one of our pet interests or flatters us? What if we just don’t want to blow a potentially amazing opportunity? Fraudsters soliciting money by masquerading as a non-profit organization can capitalize on any one of these doubts. In this case, the World Human Right Organization (a spammer or group of spammers) is inviting people around the world to a Human Rights conference in Washington DC. As an intern for the similarly named but quite different World Organization for Human Rights, I was pretty peeved when we started getting calls from people all around the world asking if an email they received, (see samples here, here and here) inviting them to a new Human Rights conference in Washington DC, was legitimate.
Non-profits are not made of resources, and if all this fake organization was doing was wasting the time of our executive assistant, they would still be doing serious harm. But these spammers are also soliciting personal information (see their website–read a bit closer to see it is a total scam) and donations.
In the course of investigating this spammer, I stumbled upon a neat sub-culture: spam-baiters. These vigilantes make a hobby of harassing spammers. Whether at 419eaters (Nigerian scams are called 419 scams because of section 419 of the Nigerian penal-code is the one which deals with fraud), fraudwatchers or the thescambaiter, there are people who spend their free-time tying spammers into knots, and keeping them away from unsuspecting or overly-hopeful victims.
The World Human Right Organization is wasting the time of the organization for which I am interning and attempting to defraud interested human rights activists, is fake, a fraud, and a purveyor of spam. Bait them or ignore them, but don’t believe them.

Just three tips or reminders to help you avoid trouble re. all these offers and announcements you get via e-mail or otherwise:
1. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!
2. Google the name with the organization of the sender.
3. Simply ignore or delete messages from sources unknown to you.

“Miss Rita Richmond” seems to be a very active person.
I also received the same invitation from her part but on the name of a slightly different organization. Being an activist in Poland I can see immediately the difference between the true and the fake invitation. First of all, such a big conference is always planned at least one year in advance, the invitation is always addressed to a person known by her/his full name and function in the organization and signed by the person from the organizational committee (the data you can easily verify by Internet).
Still I don’t understand why my anti-spam filters do not catch it.

Then I would suggest you contact the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3):

Another one was brought to by a friend who wanted me to help her with travel documents. I read through the printed out papers. I felt they were fake. My friend thought I was depriving her of a great opportunity. What I did was to google then I printed her a similar letter from laptop. That is when she came back to her senses. Many people have been deprived of huge sums of money by asking the victims to pay advance charges to a lawyer or a consultant in charge of paper processing. The world must know.

I received several mails of invitation of the type attached here below. Inmediately it caused my suspecion because they do not say how they obtained my E-mail, I am a physiscist working on topics very different from human rights, why to invite me instead of specialists in that field. The way they do it is quite strange: it is necessary apply for two conferences (New York and Dakar) but not a single one. They give hotels in Dakar to make a reservation (even if people would not be interested in going to Dakar) but they do not say nothing about Hotels in New York, ..etc. After I went to internet and discovered that other people complain because is a Fraud.

Thank you for illuminating this scam. My letter (May 15, 2010) came from a Suzanne Albright. I was suspicious when the words “rights” & “states” were misspelled and am sure glad that I checked before replying. I know, however, that I would never send my passport or banking information via email to anyone regardless of the circumstances. I certainly hope others take the time to check this out before replying.

My question is whether anybody knows if it’s the same as the following I found for WHRO, at whro-un.do.am
The text on that site is an almost complete copy of an actual NGO Irewoc, that I know to be legit (my sister works there). These WHROers simply copy pasted their text and changed some names.
Oh My God!!! I found about this conference taking place in Anaheim Convention Center, USA and Vietnam. The theme of the conference was Child Labor/Abuse. I almost believed it, called back to my country and told my colleagues to prepare sending me the documents and money. I actually googled “International Human Right Conference” and this ad for the upcoming conferences popped out from this web site which is: http://www.conferencealerts.com/seeconf.mv?q=ca16xai3. So, is that mean this web site is also a scam? I sent e-mail regarding the deadline of the registration and the fees. But they sent me back the brochure, fee invoice and the application form. The thing that surprised me was unlikely above people, they did not put any names in their e-mail. Also even I sent my name, they still start the e-mail with “Dear Sir/Ma” which shows that they send bunch of people in same time. And I google mapped the address which they put on the conference ad, it happen to show that it was a chinese restaurant!!

I believe, based on the evidence of the posters before you, that the WHRO is an organization dedicated to scamming the most open-hearted people in the world, those who dedicate their lives to fighting for human rights. Examine the WHRO’s claims carefully, because, as others have posted here, they are probably identity thieves.

I want to inform all our participants that there have been some modalities that have taken place which warrant us to shift the conference date. The conference is going to be held 12th to 14th July 2010 at Washington DC in the United States and in Athens Greece from 17th to 20th July 2010.
This is due to the inability of over 300 participants who could not catch up with the deadline, and lack of seats in our carrier Airline Company.
Furthermore, we have exceeded the normal capacity of attendants and we have over 5,000 participants already, with more than 800 more on the waiting list.

Working directly with policy makers is the most effective way to close the gap between scientific research and policy design.
WHRO research is funded by a host of international Ngo’s and government ministries in the United States of America and worldwide through our partners and links. These contacts and WHRO membership to multiple based theme-based discussion platforms greatly help to improve the child labor and rights projects
Purpose of the Conference
The Summit will focus on
1) New world vision against the practice of Child Abuse/Labor in the
new millennium.
2) Promoting greater awareness concerning the practice of child labor.
3) Lead to decisive action at the international level to help those who suffer on a daily basis on Child Abuse/Labor.
4) Striking affiliations and partnerships and exploring better ways of sourcing funds for various activities
5) DEVELOP strategies to manage evidential challenges in historic and everyday abuse claims.

AREAS OF INTEREST
To provide a framework for sharing of information and experience and for collective learning promotes dialogue and collaboration between human rights practitioners and other development practitioners develops policy guidance on how to integrate social welfare consistently into donor policies and practice acts as a resource to the DAC and its subsidiary bodies on human rights and peace building. It will also afford participants to meet the donor communities, strike Affiliations and partnerships and explore better ways of sourcing funds for their various activities among others.
The conference organizing committee injunction with the donor sponsoring committee has mapped out some financial rewards to group participants that distinguished themselves in their areas of discipline. Panel of Judges has been appointed to oversee and to select participants of merit. Awards and gifts will be given to participants on merit. conferences concerning against racism, human trafficking, child abuse,
etc. Fortunately, I received an invitation message. I wrote my details
and interests to the organizing committee. They accepted my request and

However, the hotel accommodation in Senegal, Dakar is self sponsored. It
might be a challenge for me to afford the cost. Is it possible to attend
