Yesterday Google and Virgin Group announced Virgle, a joint venture to create a permanent human settlement on Mars. In my head this word is pronounced vehr-jill, like the Roman poet whose Aeneas spent rather a long time making homes in unsuitable places before he settled in Italy. Perhaps Mars is humanity’s Italy, but it may end up being our Thrace or our Carthage–merely distractions on the way to our end goal.
