Inspiration in the Darkest Things

Like bulbs, I rise.
Like bulbs, I rise.

I grab quotes for every post I write. Sometimes I stockpile quotes, sometimes I grab them as I go. I use them as snarky/smirky ribbons or humility expositions. Sometimes I find one I love, but simply can’t use.

The unused ones stay in my mind, beating at my windows, alternately mewling and growling for my attentions. Like this one:

You may trod me
in the very dirt
But still,
like dust,
I’ll rise.
-Maya Angelou

I was writing something that made me search for inspirational quotes for survivors of sexual violence. I found this website. I would have felt too pretentious putting the quote above as the footstone to anything I wrote.

It wanted to be used. It clung and slapped and bounced at me until I found this post.

This morning I referenced it in the title of a picture (left) I snapped on my walk to school. Now I’ve given the quote a place in my life, hopefully it will leave off its begging.

Though sated with inclusion, I don’t think it will ever leave me.

Inspirational Quote:

“My debt to you, Belovèd,
Is one I cannot pay
In any coin of any realm
On any reckoning day.”
–Jessie B. Rittenhouse
