You know I’m on Spring Break when I have time to adventure on a two-hour-long Twitter flame-war with the subject of this change.org petition.
Simply, a reporter for a respected newspaper in Argentina posted a version of an article he wrote about street harassment on his blog, ending it with the sentence “me encanteria romperle el culo a pijazos,” talking about someone I know in the street harassment movement. This translates to [TRIGGER WARNING, highlight to read] = “I would like to break her asshole with my cock” or “I would like to rape her ass with my cock.”
He and I got into a debate on Twitter, which culminated in him apologizing to North American feminists on Twitter and his blog. I should probably, like, do some real work soon.
Please consider signing the petition–mostly because I don’t want to support a world where it’s ok, or even considered funny, to threaten female activists with violence because of their beliefs.
Heck, I would rather live in a world where sexual violence was never a threat to anyone, female, activist, or neither. But that’s a fight for another day.
