Pictures of The Gulf (No, the other one)

I get this little flutter in my heart every time I see “Obama travels to the Gulf.” I big into the article, excited to hear about places where I have friends from last semester, maybe even hear something new and moderate about the cultures changing at a break-neck space there.

But no. The newspapers mean the Gulf with the oil.

Wait, that doesn’t make it anymore clear.

The Gulf where a western company is behaving autocratically and the locals feel put-upon.

Wait, that’s not it either.

Ah, the Gulf with the awesome pulled-pork (pulled-pork was my first restaurant meal in Washington DC this summer. I love pulled pork).

I’ve had some trouble getting into the oil-spill story at first, but what finally caught me were the photos. This icky one from io9, or this fan art, or these horrifyingly colorful ones or this one showing that the spill is almost the same size as Scotland. They all tug my heart in a different, sadder way.

“The insufferable arrogance of human beings to think that Nature was made solely for their benefit, as if it was conceivable that the sun had been set afire merely to ripen men’s apples and head their cabbages.”–Savinien de Cyrano de Bergerac, États et empires de la lune, 1656
