I did not expect this to be the week that my poem of the week in CMU’s Academic Resource Center drew a reaction. I was so swamped with work after 15 minutes to trawling through poetry I jut decided on this silly Shel Silverstein limerick, “Rain”:

So pardon this wild crazy thing I just said–
I’m just not the same since there’s rain in my head.
This doesn’t have the sparkle of “For a Five-Year-Old” or the quiet silliness of “To David, About his Education“. It doesn’t really have a deeper meaning, or a complex idea it expressed. But it is fun, and I think during the last few weeks of school, a little simple fun doesn’t hurt. But I felt a little guilty, because I could have found a poem that would have meant more to people.
But I got a reaction.
Today when I walked into the Arc, there were 2 more poems and a poetic bit of code written on the board.

In other news, Qatar is on the front page of the New York Times because a diplomat bummed off to the bathroom on a plane to smoke a cigarette, and was sarcastic with the air marshal who followed him. A major Chinese human rights lawyer who disappeared 14 months ago has reappeared and relinquished his former career in the hopes of seeing his family again. And there’s a hopeful Op-Ed about a way forward in rebuilding higher education in Iraq.
