Notes on the Drive to the Dunes through Outer Doha

As we approach a round-about we slow down. Until that point the sound of air rising into and out of the window, bringing with it the smell of diesel and desert, dominated my hearing. Diesel and desert are the dominant non-people smells here in Qatar.

As we slow down, the sound of the wind fades down, and the music on the radio–Alicia Keys’s “If I Were A Boy”–fades in, giving the impression of a perfectly choreographed theatrical experience.

In with the ability to hear music rushes a smell of marigolds and petunias, the primary inhabitants of the round-about.

As we speed up, curving around the wide concrete center of the round-about, the radio fades back as the wind rushes in. The marigolds are replaced again with petrol and sand. We drive.
