Ever weekend I write a review of an article from the ACM TechNews newsletter for the ACM@CMU blog. Normally I cover neat projects or interesting technical stories in the news. This time TechNews headliner hit a little closer to home. Here is what I wrote:
Not many of us have the chance to watch someone make history, inspire a book, or one even who achieves his childhood dreams. I have met people outside of the Carnegie Mellon University whose lives have been impacted and brightened by Dr Pauche’s lecture, but I don’t think they were as effected as we members of the Carnegie Mellon Community were. He was our teacher (even those of us who never had a class with him). He was a member of our community (even those of use who came to the school near the end of his life). And he chose to share his life’s end with us. His death is tragic and like all early deaths, wrong in a fundamental way. But any time in my life when a member of one of my communities passes away, I have found the best way to ease the passage of their memory is through remembering their lives and continuing to live by what we learned from them. Randy Pauche was a vital member of this community, and he shall be sorely missed. Here is his last lecture:
