The best events, for me, involve spontaneous casual conversations. These happen naturally around fiber-arts. When designing the IMPAQT Late Night event, I wanted to do everything I could do to foster casual conversations between members of IMPAQT, students from CMU-Qatar, and potential applicants to IMPAQT from CMU-Pittsburgh. So I thought of our spinning circles in middle school, or more aptly, my stick-and-bitch evenings in high school.
Weaving, spinning and sewing are all social activities. Unlike playing Minecraft or writing a novel or changing a diaper, they grow easier with community. Below are two examples of this in action this past Saturday:
