Hopper’s Nearly Here!

I love presenting at the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing, and it’s nearly time. Perhaps because I’m not a CS or ECE major, I find all of the panels and discussions and women fascinating and inspiring. Or maybe it’s because my geekiness does not need a major to back it up. Here is my poster’s description (I will post a jpg of it tomorrow, when it’s finished printing):

OPM: How to Get the Funding You Need to Do the Work You Love
Presenter: Jessica Dickinson Goodman (Carnegie Mellon University)
Whether a travel grant to present at a conference, a nationally competitive scholarship, or a few hundred dollars for printing costs, applying for Other People’s Money (OPM) is a necessary evil for women in computing. This poster is informed by the experiences of institutional grant distributors and successful grant-seekers and will unveil the grant application process, to help attendees gain the knowledge they need to get the funding they need.

Continuing a trend from last year, all of my Inspirational Quotes from this year’s Hopper conference will have a theme. Last year it was deserts; the year before that, Anita Borg. This year, it will be powerful women in Science Fiction. Get ready for River Tam, River Song, Honor Harrington, and many more.

Inspirational Quote:

Dalek: You will be exterminated!
River Song: [with a slight emotional waiver] Not yet. Your systems are still restoring, which means your shield density is compromised.
River Song: [pulls gun from holster and adjusts it] One alpha meson burst through your eye stalk would kill you stone dead.
Dalek: [stops advancing]
Dalek: Records indicate you will show mercy! You are an associate of the Doctor’s!
River Song: [charges gun] I’m River Song.
River Song: [levels weapon] Check your records again.
[pause]
Dalek: Mercy.
River Song: Say it again?
Dalek: Mercy!
River Song: [measuredly] One more time.
Dalek: [shaking in fear]
Dalek: Mer-cy-y-y!
