Where I’m Interning

I have learned so much and had so much fun this week. This summer I am the Web Content Manager for the World Organization for Human Rights USA in Washington DC. This week I am spending a lot of time familiarizing myself with our cases (there are a lot more than are profiled on the page this link goes to), which involves reading lots of affidavits and opinions. Since a lot of our work is protecting people who have been tortured from being deported to be tortured again, I have had to read a lot of ugly stuff. My destressing mechanisms:

  1. Cooking some intense pasta sauce
  2. Playing Farmtown on Facebook with my boyfriend
  3. Reading The Fresco by Sheri S. Tepper
  4. Attending an after-work round table talk from former Undersecretary of the Treasury (and CMU professor) David McCormick
  5. Applying for an evening and weekend job selling bicycles
  6. Taking a intro to Arabic class at the Islamic Center on Embassy Row

Inspirational Quote:

“We should emphasize the things that unite us and make these the only ‘litmus test’ of what constitutes a Republican: our belief in restraining government spending, pro-growth policies, tax reduction, sound national defense, and maximum individual liberty.” He continued, “As to the other issues that draw on the deep springs of morality and emotion, let us decide that we can disagree among ourselves as Republicans and tolerate the disagreement.”–President Ronald Reagan quoted
