The Importance of Family in Qatar

I heard a lot about the importance of family a lot in prepping to go to Doha. I heard a lot about it from students in Doha. I think the most convincing evidence I saw of the importance of family in Qatar was an ad for QSC (a private bank). Their front-page ad for the Gulf Times (it was one of the three English-language newspapers which were at the Movenpick) featured a little girl on the left, with a man wearing a Thobe sitting at lap-top with a suited man assisting him over his shoulder. The caption was “My Father Owns a Bank”.

From this and other experiences, I have come up with the theory that the basic unit of Qatari culture is the family, as opposed to the individual (it’s a super-broad statement, I know. That’s why it’s a theory).
